Nail sculpting, or nail sculpture, is a process by which a new nail can be constructed over an existing nail, even if it’s a badly bitten one. The new nail is made of a combination of the acrylic powder and solvent and adheres to the nail with instant-drying glue. Before the acrylic nails era, the nail-building process, these depended on other glues for bonding. However, problems arise because they take 45 minutes or more to dry and were not totally water-resistant.
After the initial nail-building process, the natural nail grows with the constructed nail on top of it, but as it does so, a space appears between the end of the constructed nail and the cuticle. This space must be filled in every two weeks with what are called fillers or fill-ins, made of the same acrylic powder-glue combination. Fillers even out the surface of the nail so that there are no unwanted ridges.
Nail extensions are a variation on the basic nail-building technique. If a woman wants “instant” long nails, an acrylic-glue mixture is used to affix an extension to her own nails. Nail extension starts somewhere in the middle to upper third of the nail and must be carefully smoothed out by the manicurist so that it won’t be uneven.
There are also a number of ways to mend nails which are split, chipped or broken. The most common are wrapping or patching. The oldest technique is a paper patch. A small square of paper is glued on top of the split or break and is then wrapped and glued under the nail to give it a support system. Cotton patching, which is a fairly new method, works on the same principle, using a very thin filament from a cotton ball. A third technique is brand-new and involves wrapping a piece of clear plastic film over the nail in the same way as the paper patch. The clear plastic has the advantage of complete transparency and can be worn with clear nail polish.
Most of these processes can be used on both fingernails and toenails and are available at specialized nail salons and in many beauty salons which advertise themselves as “full-service.” If a customer wants a nail sculpture service, they need to go back to the salon in every two weeks to correct unwanted ridges. Correcting these nails last for about 1 to 2 hours. Also, nails that are sculptured needs special attention. Although these sculptured nails are durable, you should prevent these from being pressured or cracked because you can obtain much damage with it.
